Diversity & Inclusion
The general topic of diversity is by definition the fact or quality of being diverse or different and the point or respect in which things differ. It has also been viewed as variety "Charles Darwin saw in the diversity of species the principles of evolution that operated to generate the species: variation, competition and selection (Scientific American).
Inclusion implies a feeling of belonging and focuses on diverse qualities as unique and valuable.
The diversity definition has changed. While "diversity" used to be a code word for Black, today it encompasses Latinos, Asians, American Indians, people of mixed racial heritage, women, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender people, people with disabilities, people of different generations, people of varying religious groups, veterans and immigrants.
Many have used the terms “diversity” and “inclusion” interchangeably; however some believe they are distinctly different and that inclusion takes a further step in requiring a paradigm shift in human consciousness, awareness and interaction.
In this section we discuss diversity and inclusion as it applies to our practices in business. The following subtopics are included; however, others may be developed in the future.
